Like her the Saints retire
Like her the Saints retire,
In their Chapeaux of fire,
Martial as she!
Like her the Evenings steal
Purple and Cochineal
After the Day!
“Departed” – both – they say!
i.e. gathered away,
Not found,
Argues the Aster still –
Reasons the Daffodil
Profound!
F150/J60/1860
Net als zij trekken Heiligen zich terug,
Met hun Hoedjes van vuur,
Zo Krijgshaftig is ze!
Net als zij stelen Avonden
Paars en Scharlakenrood
Als de Dag voorbij is !
“Vertrokken” – alle twee – zeggen ze!
D.w.z. verstopt,
Niet gevonden,
Beweert de roerloze Aster –
Redeneert de Narcis
Diepzinnig!
Het gedicht blijft raadselachtig. Gaat het om een bloem (fuchsia of tulp)? Het gedicht is naar Susan Dickinson gestuurd. Gaat het misschien (ook) over de afstand die ze tot elkaar voelen?
Varianten:
– voor “their Chapeaux” (regel 2): “a Chapeau” (een Hoed);
– voor ”After” (regel 6): “Unto” (Tot aan).
