Derives its Magnitude –
‘Tis Duke, or Dwarf, according
As is the Central Mood –

The fine – unvarying Axis
That regulates the Wheel –
Though Spokes – spin – more conspicuous
And fling a dust – the while.

The Inner – paints the Outer –
The Brush without the Hand –
Its Picture publishes – precise –
As is the inner Brand –

On fine – Arterial Canvas –
A Cheek – perchance a Brow –
The Star’s whole Secret – in the Lake –
Eyes were not meant to know.

Het Uiterlijk – ontleent aan het Innerlijk
Zijn Grootsheid –
Het is Hertog, of Dwerg, overeenkomstig
Hoe de Innerlijke Gemoedstoestand is –

De prachtige – onwrikbare As
Die het Wiel regelt –
Ook al draaien – de Spaken – meer in ‘t zicht
En waaien ze stof op – ondertussen.

Het Innerlijk – schildert het Uiterlijk –
Het Penseel zonder Hand –
Toont zijn Schilderij – precies –
Zoals het innerlijk Merk is –

Op fijn – Levend Canvas –
Een Wang – of misschien een Wenkbrauw –
Het hele Geheim van de Ster – in het Meer –
Was niet voor onze Ogen bestemd.
