A Species stands beyond –
Invisible, as Music –
But positive, as Sound –
It beckons, and it baffles –
Philosophy – don’t know –
And through a Riddle, at the last –
Sagacity, must go –
To guess it,

To gain it, Men have borne
Contempt of Generations
And Crucifixion, shown –
Faith slips – and laughs, and rallies –
Blushes, if any see –
Plucks at a twig of Evidence –
And asks a Vane, the way –
Much Gesture, from the Pulpit –
Strong Hallelujahs roll –
Narcotics cannot still the Tooth
That nibbles at the soul –

Deze Wereld is niet het Einde.
Er komt nog een Vorm achteraan –
Onzichtbaar, als Muziek –
Maar net zo echt, als Geluid –
Het wenkt, en wekt verbijstering –
Filosofie – heeft er geen weet van –
En het Raadsel, aan het einde –
Zal om Scherpzinnigheid vragen –
Om het te doorgronden,

Om het op te lossen, hebben Mensen
Eeuwenlang Minachting doorstaan
En de Kruisiging, tentoongesteld –
Geloof struikelt – en lacht, en herpakt zich –
Bloost, als iemand kijkt –
Klampt zich vast aan een takje Bewijs –
En vraagt aan een Windwijzer, de richting –
Grootse Gebaren, van de Preekstoel –
Krachtige Halleluja’s stampen er –
Narcotica kunnen de Tand niet kalmeren
Die knaagt aan de ziel –
